Regardless of what anyone’s personal feelings are about Floyd Mayweather Jr., there is an undeniable fact the fighter has proven beyond any doubt he has figured out the sport of boxing. Every nook, every cranny where a potential advantage in boxing might lay hidden, Mayweather finds it and exploits it.

That much was clear again Saturday night, when he defeated Shane Mosley by unanimous decision at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Mayweather’s professional record now consists of 41 wins and zero losses over the course of more than 13 years.

Following the dominant performance, former world champion Oscar De La Hoya said there is no longer any doubt in his mind who the best fighter in the world is. To read more of this article the link to the Las Vegas Sun.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr., controversially declared himself a better fighter than Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson in the latest episode of HBO’s 24/7 Mayweather vs. Mosley. Mayweather didn’t back off those comments during a Thursday teleconference to preview his May 1 fight against Shane Mosley at the MGM Garden Arena.

In fact, Mayweather (40-0, 25 KO) elaborated and said a victory against Mosley would further prove his point.

“Things change, it’s out with the old and in with the new,” Mayweather said. “Muhammad Ali was one hell of a fighter, but Floyd Mayweather is the best.”

Asked where he would put Mosley (46-5, 39 KO) on his all-time list, Mayweather said he wasn’t sure Mosley should be ranked.

“I don’t know how Mosley can call himself great or say he’s a future Hall of Famer because we don’t know how long this guy was taking enhancement drugs,” Mayweather said.

Mosley’s name was prominent in the 2003 BALCO investigation, which also included notable athletes such as Barry Bonds, and it was revealed he had taken illegal performance enhancers before a fight against Oscar De La Hoya.

Although Mayweather said beating Mosley would build on his legacy, he didn’t have any compliments for his opponent.

“He’s a fighter that always worries about landing one big shot and worries about who is strong,” Mayweather said. “I worry about being smart and winning.”

The conversation naturally drifted toward Manny Pacquiao, whom Mayweather was originally slated to fight in March before the two sides couldn’t agree on drug testing procedures.

Mayweather had no slot for where Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO) ranked in the all-time great list, but assured it was nowhere close to him.

“We know he’s been knocked out twice and he’s been out-boxed by Erik Morales,” Mayweather said. “But they still give him boxer of the decade. That’s something I don’t understand.”

“All I’ll say is this: If you’re a clean athlete, take the test. Show the world.”

Mayweather harped on the idea that Pacquiao gets more credit than him despite his undefeated record.

Mayweather said he heard detractors after every one of his victories and already planned on it happening again after the Mosley fight.

“When I go out and beat Shane Mosley, they will say he’s over the hill,” Mayweather said. “There’s always an excuse.”

Although the bout is between two of the biggest names in boxing, a title will not be on the line. Mosley’s WBA welterweight championship belt is safe even if he loses.

Mayweather said this did not bother him and that he no longer cared about titles.

“At this level, for Floyd, it’s not about belts,” said Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather’s promoter. “It’s about fighting for his legacy and it’s about money.”

As far as Mayweather is concerned, however, his legacy should already be intact.

“I got respect for Sugar Ray Robinson. I got respect for Muhammad Ali,” Mayweather said. “But I’m a man just like them and put on my pants just like they put on their pants. But what makes them any better than me?” To read more of this article click the link to go to the Las Vegas Sun.

Fred’s Tavern in Las Vegas is recieving a $1,000 fine for failing to pay a customer $300 over five moths ago. The commission accepted the settlement that was signed by Kurt L. Schoen, head of the company that runs the business.

The state Gaming Control Board ordered the casino in March 2009 to make the $300 payment as part of a dispute with a customer. Regulators contacted the casino several times, saying it had to make the payment to Michael Pascarella within 20 days. James Doucette, operations officer for the casino, told the board he had mailed the check, but Pascarella never received it. In August, Doucette delivered the check to the board.

Commissioner Joseph Brown voted against the settlement, saying the commission should take action against Doucette for lying to state officials. But he was informed the settlement didn’t cover the behavior of Doucette.

Commissioner John Moran abstained from voting because his law firm had ties to the club. In other action, the commission approved financier Edward A. Johnson to acquire one-third from Ryan Sprott and Robert Neal Pomroy in DLJMP HRH VoteCo, LLC, which holds 84.4 percent of the Hard Rock Hotel-casino in Las Vegas.

Johnson said he will be at the hotel for one or two days a month. Casino president Randy Kwasniewski shot himself to death in his home in March. The Hard Rock has an estimated 2,300 employees and lost $197 million in 2009. The commission took up the Johnson case but there was no discussion before the application was approved.

Also, the commission rejected a proposed settlement with a pub owner in Reno who struck a man who fell on his head and hit the rim of a car. The victim, Jens Morrison, nearly died, officials said. Justin S. Moscove was found guilty of a gross misdemeanor battery charge and placed on probation for up to 36 months. He was ordered to pay the victim $276,106.

The state Gaming Control Board and Moscove agreed to a penalty that his license be limited for the time he was on probation and when that was completed, he would have to apply for a new gaming license at his Flowing Tide Pub and Grill. Commissioner Moran called the proposed settlement a “wrist slap” and called the incident a “fairly serious” offense. Other commissioners agreed.

More than four months after debuting its Las Vegas hotel, Mandarin Oriental unveiled its model condos Wednesday in an effort to grab more luxury buyers.

Until this week, potential buyers had to visit CityCenter’s residential sales pavilion to view the model condos. Now, interested parties can tour fully furnished models and Mandarin Oriental’s amenities, a marketing tool CityCenter executives hope revitalizes condo sales.

“Different consumers come into the market at different times,” Tony Dennis, executive vice president of CityCenter’s residential division said. “We had people come into CityCenter and bought off a plan right away before we even opened a sales center. Then, there is a whole other group of people who want to see it to believe it.”

Currently, 205 of the 227 residences at Mandarin Oriental are under contract, but Dennis said he doesn’t expect all of the contracts to close escrow. As of Tuesday, 25 units had closed escrow, and five of the condominiums are already occupied by owners. Closing of the purchases at Mandarin Oriental began in January.

“So we have about 180; we have a little work to go, let’s put it that way,” Dennis said of the units that have not closed but are under contact.

The opening of the model condos will give buyers the opportunity to preview design and furnishing options and help CityCenter fill vacancies from unsigned units or failed contracts, Dennis said. The Mandarin Oriental condos are the largest and priciest of the residential offerings at CityCenter.

Prices range from $1.1 million to about $7 million. Built above the hotel’s 392 rooms, the residences range from 1,000-square-foot, one-bedroom units to 4,000-square-foot, three-bedroom penthouses. To read the rest of the article click below to go to the Las Vegas Sun.

Steve Wynn’s compensation as chief executive of Wynn Resorts changed little in 2009 as the casino operator struggled in Las Vegas, according to a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Wynn’s compensation totaled $8.39 million in 2009, compared with $8.45 million in 2008. Those numbers compare to the $11.2 million Wynn made in 2007, according to the filing. The package included $2.95 million in salary, a $4.06 million cash bonus and $1.37 million in perks, mostly for personal use of a company aircraft. Wynn received no stock or options.

The Sun calculates total compensation based on an executive’s base salary, bonus, non-equity compensation, change in pension, all other compensation, options exercised and stocks vested. The Sun does not include stock and option awards until the stocks vest or options are exercised. As of March 1, Wynn held more than 11 million shares in Wynn Resorts, the filing indicated. Last year, Steve Wynn held 24 million shares with his then-wife, Elaine Wynn, but the couple sold some shares and split the rest of their stake as they divorced. The divorce was final Jan. 5.

Chief Financial Officer Matt Maddox took home $8.9 million in 2009, according to Sun calculations, including a base salary of $780,000 and a bonus of $5.65 million, the highest bonus of executives listed in the filing. Wynn Resorts reported Maddox’s total compensation and cost to the company was $15 million in 2009, compared to $17.7 million in 2008. Chief Operating Officer Marc Schorr received $5 million in compensation, according to Sun calculations. Schorr received a base salary of $1.8 million and a bonus of $2 million. Wynn Resorts reported his total compensation was $18.9 million in 2009, compared to $26 million in 2008. Read the rest of this article at the Las Vegas Sun

The national convention of the American Greyhound Track Owners Association that starts today at Caesars Palace will include a sober accounting of the industry’s latest victims — and the intractable problems that will contribute to future closures. Each year attendance drops at the convention. This year’s gathering is expected to draw about 120 people. Fifteen years ago the tally was upwards of 400.

The industry is in such rapid decline that a growing number of dog track owners are finding common ground with animal rights groups hoping to put live dog racing out of its misery. In Iowa, for example, Harrah’s Entertainment is trying to outlaw part of its gambling business and is willing to pay the state $7 million a year for the privilege.

More than half of the nation’s greyhound tracks have closed for lack of business in the past three decades. Four closed last year alone, leaving some states without any live dog racing. To read more of this article click to go to the Las Vegas Sun.

Northern Iowa’s Ali Farokhmanesh took an open long range three pointer in a tied game with seconds remaining at the Ford Center. The three pointer made it leaving a very eerie feeling to the UNLV players and coaches.

With just under five seconds left to play the ball shattered through the net and ultimately spelled the end of a 25-9 campaign for the Rebels, who lost a first-round NCAA Tournament game for the first time in the Lon Kruger era, 69-66. The future is bright for the program, with most of the team coming back next season, along with transfer Quintrell Thomas and 6-foot-11 redshirting freshman forward Carlos Lopez.

The worst of the recession appears to have finally past. After two years of economic decline, the gross metropolitan product of Las Vegas, which measures Southern Nevada’s total output of goods and services, grew slightly in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to the Brooking’s Institution. The quarter also brought a substantial reduction in the foreclosure rate, although Nevada still leads the nation.

Nothing is certain and a double-dip recession isn’t out of the question, but the report from Brookings — a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that collaborates with UNLV — indicates we may be on the cusp of economic improvement.

Although the undefeated Bowles has a reputation for finishing fights none of his professional contests have gone the distance his knockout win over Miguel Torres for the WEC bantamweight title last August has been chalked up, by some, as no more than blind luck.

After having his bell rung by Torres early in the first round, Bowles backed up to the cage and looked to be moments away from suffering his first loss. With Torres charging in for the finish, Bowles landed a huge counter right hook that caught Torres by surprise and put him on the canvas.

In November 2008, Mike Brown defeated the popular Urijah Faber for the WEC featherweight championship with a first-round knockout. Similar to Bowles’s experience, Brown’s win often was characterized as a fluke because of mistakes Faber had made. Eventually Brown was able to quiet his critics by defending the belt twice, once over Leonard Garcia and again in a rematch with Faber last June. To read more go to the Las Vegas Sun.
